Healthy Eating – Why Bother?

Food plays such a huge role in our lives, it stands to reason that the quality of the whole experience can affect our state of health. Eating addresses our physiological needs for nourishment but it is also a key way that we nurture ourselves and others.
As I see it, eating for optimal health involves four aspects – what foods we eat, how they are processed, food preparation, and the act of eating itself.  Each of these is an important component of nutritional wellness.
Most of us have a good idea about the foods we should be eating on a regular basis. However, practicing this every day may be a bit challenging. Even a gradual shift towards more nutritious, whole foods can produce amazing results in how we feel and perform. And, when we add these foods to our diet, we tend to eat fewer less nutritious products.
Just as important is how food is produced. I believe it is wise to choose organically grown crops and free range animal products as much as possible. Though more expensive and harder to find, the quality and taste is well worth the money and effort. Processed foods that are marketed for their convenience are usually higher in fat, sodium and additives while lacking important nutrients including fibre.
Sadly, many people consider meal preparation an unpleasant chore.  I like to approach cooking as a creative outlet. If you don’t particularly like it or are pressed for time, why not make this a family event?  Getting kids involved can increase the chances that they will eat a greater variety of foods and is an opportunity to teach them good eating habits. Cooking need not be complicated or time consuming. Even simple recipes can be delicious. If you feel unskilled in the kitchen, you might consider signing up for one of the many cooking workshops offered in the community.
Eating itself is an act of nurturance. Our state of mind affects our digestion so it is always best to avoid eating when we are upset or hurried.  It is also important to dine in an atmosphere of beauty and calm. Flowers, a nice table setting, candles, and calming music all contribute to making even an ordinary meal a special event.
A little attention, commitment and effort will result in a healthy and satisfying culinary experience.
